| | Celtic round tower
|
| The new turret mold really begs for being used to construct a celtic round tower Radius and wall thickness are just perfect. Armed with inspriration and photos from the last vacation to Ireland I went to work.
An interesting feature of the round towers is that they have the entrance in 3-4m height, this is for defensive reasons. There are few windows, just for letting a little light in. The topmost floor usually has more windows (like 4, north, south, east and west) The roof of the original round towers seems to have been cone shaped and made from stone.
Building the tower itself was fairly easy, but I did make a mold for a complet tile set, just to speed up the whole process. The roof is a little more complicated. HirstArts blocks are much larger than the stones of the original buildings, which are made of smaller and more irregular shaped pieces. O well, I think I'll just ignore that...
Examples for round towers in good conditions are in Clonmacnoise, Rock of Cashel and Glendalough.
