Abstract:
A model of a city block in Vienna containing 56 Objects was created using a low-detail geometric model, fine structures in the fassades modeled by applying photographic textures. The information about the geometry was obtained from the two-dimensional Geographic Information System (GIS), the roofs were modeled using stereoscopic analysis of aerial photographs.

These information sources were fused in a manual process. With the Program WorldView the digital city model can be visualized, the focus lay on a natural and intuitive way of steering and moving around the digital model. Physical impossibilities were avoided, so that a user feels comfortable in the virtual environment and can expect physically correct reactions for his input.

A tool was created to correct color variations in the photographs on a fassade. Differing illumination can be compensated as well as smooth shadows. The color reference point can also be obtained from a second picture so that two images will show exactly the same colors in their fassades.

This diploma thesis was supported both financially and by supplying an Onyx computer by Silicon Graphics Inc. (SGI).
