The Gaming Table

When building my gaming board I tried to make it as good looking as possible while still staying as flexible as possible. I wanted to combine two important aspects of gaming table design, that seemed to be important to me. First I wanted to have submersible sections for rivers and second I wanted a sectional gaming board that didn't take a lot of room to store.

When designing the table, I thought about what I wanted it to be:

  • look terrific (this seems to be the first attribute I come up with every time I design something... :-)
  • be stable - you should be able to lean to it
  • be modular - I wanted to have endless possibilities of combinations
  • include deeper sections - I wanted to have good looking rivers
After intesive study of many websites (www.terragenesis.co.uk to name one) and pondering this and that I decided to go with this variant:

  • 40x40cm tiles
  • A frame to hold 3x4 tiles
  • To save space flat tiles are mouted on pillars and use up less space when stored
  • river sections are designed to be modular and fit to each other at predefined edges
  • raised sections (hills, mountains) are made normally and can be arranged to taste
So it would be sort of a hybrid modular table.

Thoughts:

The table is too large. It uses up too much space and it is very hard to move units in the center of the table. 35x35cm or 30x30cm tiles would have been enough.

The table is very stable and won't fall over when leaned to.

There is storage room inside the table! I didn't think of this while designing, but it is a nice and very practicable addition.
